State Police and Portland firefighters responded to a car fire on Interstate 295 in Portland Tuesday.

A woman driving a Ford minivan in which her daughter was riding smelled smoke and heard an unusual noise just as she was approaching Exit 9 at 5 p.m. and pulled over. When she got out, she saw flames shooting out from the under the hood, police said.

Flames spread from the engine compartment to the interior dash before firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, said Deputy Fire Chief Michael Shutts.

Nobody was injured in the incident and because she was able to pull to the far right hand side of a three-lane section of highway, evening commuter traffic was not significantly slowed.
