Old Port opens play by native daughter

LEWISTON-AUBURN NATIVE Cheryl Hamilton was a recent college grad when she returned to the twin cities in 2001 to work on the refugee resettlement staff, just in time for the Somali migration to Lewiston. She turned her experiences into a play called “Checkered Floors.” The production begins a five-day run at the Old Port Playhouse on Wednesday.

Public welcome for sacred harp singing

LEARN SACRED HARP singing, also known as shape note singing, at an afternoon gathering at Portland New Church. (It’s not a performance.) Sacred Harp is a traditional style of four-part singing that originated in the South and brings people together to sing sacred choral music. “Sacred Harp” refers to the human voice as a musical instrument.
