PORTLAND — At least two skiers who were injured when lift chairs at Maine’s Sugarloaf ski resort derailed and plummeted 25 to 30 feet to the ground remain hospitalized two days after the accident.

Maine Medical Center in Portland says Andy Tonge and Mike Katz were in satisfactory condition Wednesday, but the hospital declined to say if an unidentified third skier who was admitted was still hospitalized.

Eight skiers were hurt Tuesday when five chairs on the 35-year-old East Spillway lift fell to the ground. Eight people were sent to hospitals and dozens more were stranded on the lift for more than an hour.

A state investigation is ongoing.

The resort says employees were attempting to realign a lift cable when the cable came off track.
