ORONO – Rachele Burns of Gorham, a redshirt freshman guard on the University of Maine women’s basketball team, will miss the rest of the season with an ACL and medial meniscus tear in her left knee.

Burns, who previously came back from three reconstructive surgeries on her right knee, plans to have surgery in Boston in January, with six months of rehab to follow.

“The injury is a really tough break for Rachele,” said Coach Cindy Blodgett. “She has had to really fight her way back after the injuries to the right knee, and I don’t think you can ever really prepare for something like that to happen.

“We are going to support her in any way we can here in her recovery.”

Burns returned from her most recent surgery to make her Maine debut Nov. 27 against South Alabama. She played in five games, averaging 3.4 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 14.8 minutes per game.

“My goal is to get healthy and go from there,” Burns said. “It will be the same process I went through last year, but at least I got to play in five games before the injury this time.

“All I can do from here is take it day by day and work hard.”
