In the time of year when we emphasize giving and sharing and community heroes, we would do well to acknowledge the Lions Clubs International, the oldest community service organization in the world. An outstanding local example is the South Portland Lions Club, which through volunteerism since 1931 annually raises close to $90,000, most recently in support of Boys and Girls Club, Visiting Nurses Association, Camp Sunshine, Trucking for Kids, Food Pantry, Salvation Army Kettle, Special Olympics, Thanksgiving Baskets, Iris Network, Highland Memorial Cemetery, South Portland Historical Society, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross Blood Drives, and many projects helping the hearing-impaired and sight-impaired.

If you would like to be part of this community volunteerism to serve others less fortunate call 767-6474. January is open enrollment for the South Portland Lions – no dues, no fees.
