PORTLAND — The prosecution continues to call witnesses this morning, the second day of Chad Gurney’s murder trial at Cumberland County Superior Court.
Portland Police Detective Karl Rybeck testified that Gurney was calm, coherent and responsive when he was placed under arrest in the early morning of May 26, 2009.
The state is trying to prove that Gurney was legally sane when he killed 18-year-old Zoe Sarnacki. The defense claims he was delusional and did not understand the consequences of his actions.
Gurney, 29, waived his right to a jury, so the case will be decided by Justice Roland Cole. The trial is expected to run into next week.
