ORONO – Kirsten Jeter made a pair of foul shots with less than one second left and finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds as Stony Brook held off the University of Maine 73-70 in an America East women’s college basketball game Sunday.

The Black Bears (3-16, 1-6) trailed the Seawolves (4-15, 1-6) by as many as 11 points in the second half before rallying to cut the deficit to 71-70 on a 3-pointer by Tanna Ross with 43 seconds left in the game.

The Black Bears forced a shot-clock violation on the ensuing Stony Brook possession to get the ball back but turned it over before getting a shot off.

Katelyn Vanderhoff led the Black Bears with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals. Ashleigh Roberts added 14 points and nine rebounds for Maine and Ross finished with 13 points.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 72, VERMONT T.C. 62: Christina Ricci scored 31 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Seawolves (9-11, 6-2) to a Yankee Small College Conference win over the Knights at South Portland.

Esther Palmieri added 17 points for SMCC and Alisa Sweet scored 16.

(3) DUKE 65, N.C. STATE 64: Freshman Chelsea Gray hit a driving layup with 12 seconds left and the Blue Devils (19-0, 5-0 ACC) rallied from a 20-point deficit to beat the Wolfpack (9-10, 1-4) at Raleigh, N.C.

Jasmine Thomas scored 14 points for the Blue Devils.

(5) TENNESSEE 73, AUBURN 53: Shekinna Stricklen scored 18 points and Glory Johnson had 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Volunteers (19-2, 7-0 SEC) past the Tigers (12-8, 5-2) in Auburn, Ala.

Alli Smalley and Morgan Toles led Auburn with 13 points.

(11) NOTRE DAME 69, ST. JOHN’S 36: Devereaux Peters dominated inside with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, leading the Fighting Irish (17-4, 6-1 Big East) past the Red Storm (14-6, 3-4) at South Bend, Ind.

(15) MARYLAND 88, (10) NORTH CAROLINA 65: Alyssa Thomas had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and the Terrapins (16-3, 3-2 ACC) had four other players score in double figures in a surprisingly easy victory over the Tar Heels (17-3, 3-2) in College Park, Md.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

VERMONT T.C. 88, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 83: Kevin Carr scored 38 points to lead the Knights as they edged the Seawolves (11-10, 5-3) in a Yankee Small College Conference game at South Portland.

SMCC was paced by Coleman Findlay, who scored 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting.

(19) WISCONSIN 78, NORTHWESTERN 46: Wisconsin freshman Josh Gasser had 10 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double in school history, leading the Badgers (15-4, 5-2 Big Ten) past the Wildcats (13-6, 3-5) at Evanston, Ill.

(21 WEST VIRIGINIA 56, SOUTH FLORIDA 46: Casey Mitchell had 13 points and 14 rebounds to power West Virginia to the Big East win at Morgantown, W.Va.
