AUGUSTA — Maine’s Labor Department says the state’s unemployment rate remained unchanged in December at 7.3 percent.

But the preliminary 7.3 percent is an improvement over the same month a year earlier, when 8.1 percent of the work force was unemployed.

Last month, the number of unemployed in Maine totaled 51,200, down 5,800 from a year ago.
