AUGUSTA — Maine House Speaker Robert Nutting is asking fellow Republicans to give solid caucus support to a supplemental budget for the current fiscal year.

The budget is expected to receive quick House and Senate support when it comes up for preliminary votes today. The Appropriations Committee late Friday approved the spending update for the year ending June 30.

Gov. Paul LePage’s proposed supplemental budget pays down a large portion of the state’s Medicaid debt to hospitals, conforms state and federal tax provisions and accounts for increased enrollments in MaineCare, the state’s Medicaid program.

LePage on Thursday plans to unveil a budget package for the two years starting July 1.
