One weekend of postseason action is in the books and things are about to really ramp up.

Last weekend, swimming’s first of two Southwesterns meets was contested and the girls’ hockey and indoor track regular seasons came to a close. Basketball (see story) has a week to go and boys’ hockey and skiing are nearing their end.

Here’s a look at what’s occurred and what’s to come:

Boys’ hockey

Cape Elizabeth’s boys’ hockey team entered Wednesday’s rescheduled showdown with top-ranked Greely with a 9-4 mark, good for third behind the Rangers and York in the Western Class B Heal Points standings. The Capers had been idle for nearly two weeks. Cape Elizabeth is at Marshwood Saturday and visits Westbrook Tuesday.

In Western A, South Portland is seventh in the Heals with a 5-6-2 mark after splitting a pair last week. The Red Riots edged visiting Gorham, 3-2 (D.J. Conley, Robert Hannigan and Zach Griffin scored the goals), Thursday, then lost at Cheverus Saturday, 3-2 (despite goals from Griffin and Josh Cobb). South Portland hosted Portland Thursday and visits undefeated, defending state champion Biddeford Saturday.

Scarborough is closing in on joining the playoff picture and will be very dangerous if it makes it. The Red Storm fell to 5-8 last week after narrow home losses to Falmouth (3-1) and Kennebunk (2-1). Against the Yachtsmen, Jordan Bathe had the lone goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Scarborough’s best opportunity to tie it came with five minutes remaining in the third. Shorthanded, Zach Pettengill fought through two defenders and fired high to the far post. Falmouth goalie Jay Hurdman couldn’t glove it, deflecting the puck downward, off the post and away from goal.

“He had the whole top corner from where I was,” Scarborough coach Norm Gagne said. “We had a lot of close ones. That happens. It’s hockey. I am pleased with the effort. We played hard and that’s all you can ask for. We didn’t get the bounces to go our way tonight.”

Pettingill had the lone goal versus the Rams. Scarborough (10th in the Western A Heals) went to Lewiston Wednesday and visits Gorham Saturday.

Girls’ hockey

Scarborough’s girls’ hockey team is the top seed for the West region playoffs. The Red Storm finished the regular season 12-4-2, despite falling, 3-0, at home to York and 4-1 at St. Dom’s to wrap things up. Scarborough will host No. 4 Biddeford (7-10-1) in the semifinals Friday at 9 p.m., at USM. The Red Storm and Tigers split in the regular season. Biddeford won, 2-1, Nov. 26. Scarborough rolled, 7-0, Jan. 10. The winner gets either No. 2 York or No. 3 Cheverus in the regional final Wednesday. The state championship game is Feb. 19 at the Colisee in Lewiston.

Cape Elizabeth’s co-op team with Waynflete fell short of the playoffs with a 5-13 mark, which left it seventh (only four teams qualified). The Capers closed with a 4-2 home win over Portland an a 3-2 home setback to Biddeford.

Track

The indoor track regular season ended last weekend.

At USM in Gorham, Cape Elizabeth’s boys were third and the girls second in a seven-team meet. The boys got a victory from Thomas Bottomley in the senior 400 (55.56 seconds). Girls’ winners included Erin Lyons in the junior 400 (1 minute, 8.4 seconds), Alissa Mitchell in the junior shot put (25 feet, 1.5 inches) and Karyn Barrett in the senior shot put (28-8.75).

Scarborough joined Gorham, Westbrook and Windham for its final meet. The Red Storm boys capped a perfect regular season by finishing first and the girls followed suit.

Boys’ winners included Mike Pino in the junior shot put (38-6.25), Zach Brown in the mile (4:58.0), Alec James in the junior 45 hurdles (6.4) and the junior 400 (58.3), Orin James in the senior 45 hurdles (6.2), Ryan Jamison in the junior 40 (4.8), Tom Hague in the 600 (1:22.0), Alex Pok in the 300 (37.1), Nick Morris in the senior 400 (55.4), Merrick Madden in the junior 200 (26.4), Scott Merrill in the senior 200 (25.7) and Robert Hall in the junior 800 (2:09.1). The senior (2:21.0) and open (1:45.7) relay teams were also first.

The girls got wins from Mary Cleary in the junior shot put (25-1), Emelia Scheemaker in the high jump (4-6), Morgan Rodway in the junior 40 (5.6), Nicole Kirk in the senior 40 (5.5) and senior 200 (28.9), Emily Tolman in the 600 (1:34.0), Karli-An Gilbert in the junior 400 (1:09.5) and the junior (1:57.2), senior (1:55.7) and open (4:25.6) relays.

South Portland competed against the city teams and both squads were second to Deering.

For the boys, Darryl Wilkinson won the mile (4:53.6), Daniel Grazewski was first in the 300 (36.7), Brian Campbell took the 600 (1:26.0), Austin Gotts the junior 800 (2:16.9) and Thomas Salamone the senior 800 (2:14.1). The Red Riots took the junior (1:08.1) and senior (2:20.1) relays.

Girls’ victors included Erin Bogdanovich in the junior shot put (26-6.5), Ericka Lightner in the junior 45 hurdles (6.8), Sophia Desjardins in the junior 40 (5.5), Maya Letourneau in the junior 400 (1:10.6) and junior (2:00.8) relay team.

The Western Maine Championship meet is Saturday at 4:30 p.m., at USM. The Southwestern championships are Saturday at the Expo. The girls start at 8 a.m. The boys at 3:30 p.m.

Swimming

Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and South Portland will join several of the other top swim teams in the area for the north division Southwesterns Friday and Saturday in Westbrook.

The Capers ended their regular season last Thursday losing to defending Class B champion Greely (boys, 105-77, girls, 98-81). The Red Riots swept Westbrook (boys, 101-48, girls, 95-65).

Skiing

Cape Elizabeth’s Alpine ski team took part in a slalom meet Tuesday at Shawnee Peak against Falmouth, Freeport and Greely. The boys were second to the Yachtsmen, the girls didn’t score as a team. Sam Barber was runner-up in the boys’ meet (with a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 23.44 seconds). Sarah Paclat placed 12th for the girls (1:50.35).

The Western Maine Conference Alpine championships are Friday.

Scarborough’s Alpine teams were both second at Friday’s giant slalom SMAA meet. The boys were paced by Mitch Summerson, who came in third individually (1:10.40). For the girls, Abigail Mills placed sixth (1:15.75).

Wrestling

Scarborough took part in the Western Class A regional championships Saturday at Noble High School. The Red Storm tallied 20 points to finish 10th as a team (Noble was tops with 243). Scarborough’s effort was highlighted by senior Michael Cyr’s championship in the 215-pound division. Cyr capped his run with an 8-2 decision over Marshwood’s Nicholas Ricker in the final.

The Class A state championship meet is Saturday in Augusta.
