SACO — Just 35 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, Saco Academy was founded.

On Saturday, the private school now known as Thornton Academy will be celebrate its 200th birthday. It is the first of four events to commemorate the school’s bicentennial.

The academy is inviting past and present students, faculty, family and friends to celebrate with a day of cross-country skiing, ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice sculpting and snowshoeing. Celebrations kick off at 8 a.m. with breakfast, the 200th birthday ceremony will start at 3 p.m. and a community supper will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. for $5. The day wraps up with a performance of Broadway tunes at 5:30 p.m. and a bonfire and fireworks into the evening.

Thornton Academy serves 1,300 students from Saco, Dayton, Arundel and southern Maine communities, including 52 boarding students from abroad.
