CAMDEN — Some 700 toboggan teams are in Camden for the 21st annual National Toboggan Championships.

More than 2,4000 contestants are registered for this year’s races at the Camden Snow Bowl, which kick off today and wind up on Sunday.

The races call for two-, three- and four-person toboggan teams – many dressed up in outlandish outfits – barreling down a 400-foot-long, ice-covered wooden toboggan chute and onto a frozen pond. Sleds go as fast as 40 mph and the runs take about 10 seconds.

Besides the toboggan races, the festivities include chili and chowder contests, children’s events, fireworks, costume contests, music and an awards ceremony.
