SCARBOROUGH — Hannaford Bros. on Wednesday said a reorganization of the supermarket company’s food purchasing and distribution process will not reduce jobs at its corporate offices and distribution center, where approximately 1,000 people are employed.

Michael Norton, Hannaford Bros. director of corporate communications, said the change, which will move produce procurement to Salisbury, N.C., and consolidate procurement of deli and bakery products in Scarborough, will be “job-neutral.”

“Right now we have two organizations doing the buying,” Norton said. “We want to have one.”

The change, which will take approximately a year to put into place, won’t immediately affect the company’s vendors or the chain’s “Close to Home” program, which features produce procured from local vendors, Norton said.

“It’s early,” he said. “We just announced this internally.”

Norton added that the distribution center in South Portland will likely not see major changes, except that it may do more distribution to Hannaford’s sister supermarket chains in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Hannaford, founded in Maine in 1883, operates more than 175 stores in New England and upstate New York. It is a subsidiary of Delhaize America, the U.S. arm of Belgium’s Delhaize Group. Delhaize has more than 1,500 East Coast stores, mostly in the Mid-Atlantic.
