Local athletes fare well at New Englands

Greely’s Michael Burgess came in sixth in the shot put (50 feet-8 inches) at last weekend’s New England championship indoor track and field meet in Boston.  Teammate Jack Fellows was 12th (48-5). Greely’s Liam Campbell and Stefan Sandreuter were 22nd (4 minutes, 46.90 seconds) and 25th (4:54.06) in the mile, respectively. Falmouth’s Will Wegener was 12th in the 300 (36.25 seconds). Thomas Edmonds came in 23rd in the 1,000 (2:50.78). Azad Jalali finished 24th in the 1,000 (2:54.40). The Yachtsmen’s 800 relay team (Jacob Buhelt, Jalali, Brian Prescott, Jimmy Polewaczyk) placed 19th (1;36.91). Falmouth finished 21st in the 3,200 relay (Henry Briggs, Sam Walker, Edmonds and Jalali, 8:43.22).

On the girls’ side, North Yarmouth Academy’s Hannah Hearn was 17th in the mile (5:29.59). The Panthers came in 25th in the 3,200 relay (Sasha McLean, Hillary Detert, Hearn and Hannah Twombly had a time of 10:36.92). Greely’s Kirstin Sandreuter finished 21st in the two-mile (11:53.38). The Rangers were 24th in the 3,200 relay (Sarah Fitch, Deanna Little, Melissa Jacques, Jessica Wilson, 10:33.88). Falmouth’s Sarah Sparks came in 26th in the 600 (1:49.0). The Yachtsmen’s 800 relay team (Amy Webster, Sparks, Kate Sparks and Adrienne Michalakis) was 21st (1:52.11).

At the New England swimming and diving championships in Durham, N.H., Greely’s Sarah Easterling set a new record in the backstroke (59.79 seconds). Easterling joined Katie Whittum, Megan Stroud and Sara Schad to set new records in the 400 free (3 minutes, 40.53 seconds) and the 200 free (1:42.35). On the boys’ side, Greely’s Ian Mecray took first in the 50 free (22.69). Mecray, Dan Spencer, Jon Dunnett and Peter Pacent teamed to win the 200 free relay (1:32.80).

Freeport holding Spring sports info night

Freeport High School is hosting its Spring Preseason Information Night for parents and student-athletes, Thurs., March 17, at 6:15 p.m., in the gymnasium. Running program upcoming

The Nor’Easter run training and racing program, under the direction of Maine Running Hall of Famer and current Waynflete School track coach Brian “Ziggy” Gillespie, begins this month and runs through Aug. 31.
