FALMOUTH — Two fires about five miles apart Tuesday evening decimated a home and a garage and car, as fire and emergency crews rushed around Falmouth battling the blazes.

At 6:36 p.m. the first call came in from a homeowner on Whitney Farm Way. When firefighters arrived, a garage was engulfed in flames. The crew was able to pull a burning car from the garage and extinguish the fire.

No one was injured in the first fire and the home was not badly damaged, according to fire officials.

While crews were fighting the garage fire, a second call came in to dispatch at 6:52 p.m. for a house fire at 481 Gray Road. Some Falmouth units left the garage fire, which was under control, to respond to the Gray Road fire.

Portland and Cumberland fire crews were first on the scene, less than five minutes after the call came in, because they were already on their way to Falmouth to help with the first fire.

Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire coming from the home and, as they attempted to search the home for occupants, the roof began to collapse. Firefighters were ordered out of the building and battled the flames from the outside using water from a nearby cistern and tankers shuttling water from a hydrant in Cumberland.

The homeowner, who was staying with family in the area, arrived on the scene 45 minutes after the fire began. No one was injured, but a cat was reported missing. The house is a total loss.

Crews from Windham, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth and Gray, along with Portland and Cumberland, assisted with the two fires.
