AUGUSTA  — Gov. Paul LePage has directed that the United States and the State of Maine flags be flown at half-staff until sunset in honor of Army Corp. Frank Buckles, the last surviving American veteran of World War I.

Buckles died last month at the age of 110 and he is being buried with full military honors today at Arlington National Cemetery.

President Barack Obama has signed a proclamation honoring Buckles, who lived in Charles Town, W.Va.
