Cameron Tufts, a 9-year-old boy from New Gloucester, got to be deputy sheriff for a day as part of a gift from the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Cameron’s uncle, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Tufts, surprised the boy by picking him up at school in his cruiser.

They were met in Portland by a procession of county cruisers, which escorted him to the law enforcement center on County Way. Cameron met Sheriff Kevin Joyce and took part in a white glove military inspection.

“He was completely surprised. Cameron didn’t know anything about this,” said his mother, Rhiannon Tufts.

She said her son has undergone chemotherapy for leukemia for the past three years. Those treatments ended this week, and Cameron is doing well.

He would one day like to become a police officer, his mother said.
