SOUTH PORTLAND — City Councilor Tom Blake is seeking the Democratic nomination to fill the state Senate seat being vacated by Larry Bliss.

“I would like to continue the great work of Senator Bliss in Augusta and feel that with my extensive record of community involvement that I can make a positive impact while representing the best interests of South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough residents,” Blake said in a statement announcing his candidacy.

Blake, who holds an at-large seat, was reelected to a second term in November. Blake, 59, is a retired city firefighter who teaches, coaches sports and manages properties.

Bliss, who is in his second term representing District 7, announced this month that he is resigning to take a job as an administrator in the California State University system. He was laid off more than a year ago from his job as career center director at the University of Southern Maine. His last day in the Senate is April 15.

A special election will be held to fill the seat.
