CASCO — A man wanted by the state of Georgia was arrested this morning by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy Sam Cofone pulled over William George, 35, shortly after 8 a.m. on Tenney Hill Road in Casco. George was identified as a registered sex offender and was wanted by Georgia authorities on outstanding warrants. He was arrested and charged with being a fugitive from justice and failing to register as a sex offender.

Authorities said George had been staying in the Sanford area undetected for about two months. While it is unlikely that Georgia authorities will extradite him, George is still facing charges for not registering as a sex offender in Maine.
