A man hiding behind a crane in the parking lot of the Clarion Hotel on Congress Street in Portland fled after being approached by police early this morning.
The man left behind a backpack containing a stolen gun and a quantity of illegal drugs, police say.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. after officers patrolling the area noticed a pair of feet behind the crane.
“We’ve had a bunch of thefts of catalytic converters,” says Lt. Jim Sweatt of the Portland Police Department. “They’re being sold to scrapyards for the metal.”
