Cuts in MaineCare and prescription drug programs as proposed are short-sighted and potentially detrimental to Maine’s tax revenues. I say this because there are many people in our state who suffer from chronic, debilitating conditions and cannot, therefore, hold full-time jobs that include health insurance, but they can work and want to if they can receive the medical care and medications they need. When these workers are employed they need less support from federal and state resources and they contribute to the economy both as producers of goods or services and as consumers with disposable income. Moreover, these workers pay income taxes. I hope the Legislature will think twice before they cut once as they debate the governor’s proposed budget.
