PORTLAND — One southbound lane on the Veterans Memorial Bridge was closed today, but it won’t be the last time it happens.

Jeraldine Herrera, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Transportation, said the construction of a new bridge will require more lane closures over the next two months. Those closures will allow construction crews to install concrete piers.

Today’s lane closure began at 7 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m. Herrera, who didn’t know when the next closure will take place, said the closures will take place during the day.

The new bridge is expected to open in July 2012. The existing bridge will be removed no later than December 2012.

Veterans Memorial Bridge connects Portland’s West End to South Portland.
