PORTLAND – Police continue to investigate the death of a 24-year-old woman whose remains were recovered this week.

Elena Lozada’s mother reported her missing in July because the young woman had been out of contact for an unusually long period of time. Police now consider the case an unattended death with suspicious circumstances.

Lozada had been living in an apartment on Grant Street and said she was planning to move to Boston, police said in December. But she stayed in the Portland area for weeks after moving out of the apartment, police said.

Police said Lozada’s skeletal remains were found in a remote area of the state Sunday. Lozada’s family was notified Thursday.

Few details were available about the case, but police said Friday that more information will likely be released next week.

Portland police Lt. Gary Rogers, head of detectives, would not provide additional information about where or how the remains were discovered, other than to say they were found outside Portland.

Portland police are working with Maine State Police and the state Medical Examiner’s Office.

State police will continue to assist Portland police and will defer to them regarding the release of information, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. The Medical Examiner’s Office said no information was available Friday beyond the positive identification of the remains.

Newsday, a newspaper based on Long Island, N.Y., has reported that Lozada advertised sex services on Craigslist. The paper reported that Lozada’s family had been in touch with relatives of Megan Waterman of Scarborough.

Waterman was one of four escorts whose bodies were discovered on a remote beach on Long Island in December.

Rogers said there was no indication that Lozada’s disappearance was linked to Waterman’s or to Long Island.

Lozada’s mother, Carrie Cronkite of Westfield, did not return a call seeking comment Friday.
