PORTLAND — Josephine E. DesJardins, 78, died peacefully April 23 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Deep River, Conn., Aug. 17, 1932, a daughter of Edward A. and Viola P. Lewis Atwood, she attended local schools and lived in Connecticut for many years.

In 1987 she moved to Maine to be closer to her family. 

For 10 years she worked at Maine Medical Center as a surgical supply clerk.

Following her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her sisters, going for car rides and stopping for picnic lunches.

Her hobbies included knitting and playing cards with friends.

Above all, she loved being surrounded by her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Danny DesJardins Jr., a brother, John Atwood, and a son-in-law, Edward G. Alfonso.

Surviving are six children, Carol and her husband Edgardo Yambao of Goose Creek, S.C., Linda and her husband Eduardo Tomeldon of Barnegat, N.J., Robin Alfonso of South Portland, Robert and his wife Kym DesJardins of Daytona Beach, Fla., Danny and his wife Tarie DesJardins of Portland, and Dale and his wife Luanna DesJardins of Portland; three sisters, Sylvia and her husband Joe Perkins, Jeanette and her husband Joe Cianci, and Barbara and her husband Fred Thody, all of Palmyra, and a brother, George and his wife Debbie Atwood, of Palmyra; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held April 25 at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Connecticut.
