Portland rugby team evens record

After losing their opening game to Kearsage, N.H., 17-5, the Portland boys’ U-19 rugby club defeated the Collegiate B-side, 46-0, Saturday at the Cumberland Fairgrounds. As part of the Maine College Cup Tournament, played annually between men’s and women’s teams from various Maine colleges, the Power Pigs dominated from the opening kickoff. In a cold continuous rain, captain and flanker, Jack McDonald (Cape Elizabeth) scored on the first try, followed by flyhalf Chase Rochon (Greely) converting, making the score 7-0. Outside center Max McDonald (Windham) and inside center Parker Doyon (Cheverus), scored a few minutes later, with Rochon converting only one. Scrumhalf John Toohey (Portland) added the final try of the half, and the score stood at 24-0. In the second half, the points continued to mount with prop Max Heller (Portland), and number 8 Nate Porter (Portland) scoring tries, along with the final Rochon conversion. Porter and Doyon finished the game off, each scoring on their second try, bringing the final to 46-0. Portland next plays Seacoast Rugby Club Saturday in Portsmouth, N.H.
