The spring sports season is underway in the Mid-Coast, but Mother Nature has made things challenging.

Baseball

Brunswick’s baseball team is off to the best start to date, splitting its first four contests. The Dragons opened with a 3-2 victory at Mt. Ararat, lost, 8-2, at home to Lewiston, won, 6-3, at Cony, then fell, 6-5, at home to Edward Little. Brunswick was at Oxford Hills Wednesday, seeks its first home victory Friday when it hosts Erskine and welcomes Morse Monday.

The Shipbuilders lost their opener, 8-5, at Oxford Hills last Thursday and fell 10-4 at home to Mt. Ararat Monday. After going to Edward Little Wednesday, Morse is home with Lewiston Friday and plays at Brunswick Monday.

Mt. Ararat lost three close decisions to start the year, 3-2, to visiting Brunswick, 3-1, at home to Erskine and 5-2 at Lewiston. Monday brought a 10-4 win at Morse. The Eagles hosted Cony Wednesday, go to Edward Little Friday and play host to Oxford Hills Monday.

Softball

Brunswick’s softball team is 1-3 to date. The Dragons defeated visiting Lewiston in a slugfest, 14-10, but lost to Mt. Ararat (17-5), Cony (16-1) and Edward Little (11-2). Brunswick was at Oxford Hills Wednesday, plays host to Erskine Friday and welcomes Morse Monday.

The Shipbuilders dropped their first two games to date, 16-0, in five innings, to visiting Oxford Hills, and 9-3, to visiting Mt. Ararat. Morse was at Edward Little Wednesday, welcomes Lewiston Friday and visits Brunswick Monday.

Mt. Ararat is 2-2 so far, romping at home over Brunswick (17-5), then falling, 9-2 to visiting Erskine and 2-1 at Lewiston. The Eagles won at Morse Monday (9-3), hosted Cony Wednesday, visit Edward Little Friday and host Oxford Hills Monday.

Boys’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team opened with a 12-4 win at Mt. Ararat, then lost, 8-2, at Messalonskee. The Dragons were home with Lewiston Wednesday, then welcome one of the state’s premier programs, Yarmouth, in a crossover game Saturday.

Mt. Ararat followed up its 12-4 home loss to Brunswick with a 7-3 setback at Lewiston. The Eagles got two goals and six ground balls from Casey Becker in that one and a goal and three assists from Josh Richards. Ed Maguire made five saves. Mt. Ararat was home against Mt. Blue Wednesday and hosts Noble Saturday.

In Eastern B, Morse is off to a strong start, downing host Oak Hill, 7-6 (in triple-overtime) and visiting Camden Hills, 10-6. The Shipbuilders looked for three in a row when they hosted Maranacook Wednesday. They go to Massabesic Saturday.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Mt. Ararat, the defending Eastern A champion, won its first game, 13-6, over visiting Messalonskee. The Eagles had a home showdown with rival Brunswick Tuesday, go to Westbrook Saturday and visit Gardiner Tuesday of next week.

The Dragons were 9-8 home winners over Cony in their opener, then lost, 7-6, at Messalonskee. After going to Mt. Ararat Tuesday, Brunswick hosts defending Class B state champion North Yarmouth Academy Friday and plays at Lewiston Tuesday.

Morse’s first two games were postponed. The Shipbuilders were set to open Tuesday at home versus Gardiner. After going to Thornton Academy Saturday, Morse is home against Lincoln Academy Tuesday of next week.

Track

The outdoor track season began this week. Brunswick was home with Bangor, Edward Little, Maranacook and Waterville Thursday. Morse joined MCI and Skowhegan at Leavitt Thursday. Friday, Mt. Ararat opens at home against Lawrence, Messalonskee and Rockland.

Tennis

The tennis season was due to begin Monday, but rain prevented that from happening with one exception. Morse’s girls fell, 4-0, to Oak Hill (the first singles match was suspended).

Brunswick tried again Wednesday when its boys hosted Edward Little and the girls went to the Red Eddies. Morse’s boys hosted Medomak Wednesday, while the girls went to Medomak. Mt. Ararat’s boys visited Erskine. The Eagles girls played host to Erskine.
