HOLYOKE, Mass. — The operator of New England’s electric grid says the improving economy is expected to lead to more electricity use this summer, but the region should have enough power to meet rising demand.

ISO New England said today that demand is forecast to peak at 27,550 megawatts under normal summer conditions of about 90 degrees. That would be slightly higher than last year’s peak of 27,102 megawatts. If an extended heat wave of about 95 degrees occurred, peak consumption could rise to 29,695 megawatts.

ISO says New England’s total capacity is 32,980 megawatts.

Consumer demand for electricity typically reaches its peak during the summer, due largely to air conditioning.

As the economy strengthens, more homes are built and businesses reopen or lengthen their hours of operation, leading to higher electricity use.
