MANCHESTER, N.H. – Police in New Hampshire said they have communicated with an armed man in Manchester who is holed up in an apartment building.

The standoff that began Thursday night has led to the closure of an estimated eight-block section of Manchester and the Friday closing of the West High School.

Police were called to the area to do a welfare check on a 7-year-old child. When officers arrived they were met by a man waving a handgun. It’s not known where the child is now.

Chief David Mara said police have established communication with the man. He declined to identify him. Mara said time is not a factor in resolving the standoff.

No shots have been fired.
