AUGUSTA — A legislative committee has endorsed former U.S. Navy aviator and retired admiral Gregory “Grog” Johnson for a seat on the University of Maine System Board of Trustees.

Gov. Paul LePage’s nominee won a unanimous vote of support Monday from the Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs, setting the stage for a likely Senate vote to confirm Johnson’s appointment.

Johnson, who lives in Harpswell, is a graduate of Caribou High School and 1968 graduate of the University of Maine. He became a naval aviator in 1970, graduated from the Naval War College with highest distinction and served three decades in the Navy. Johnson retired in 2004.

The system board has 16 members, 15 of whom are appointed by the governor.
