LUBEC  — Canadian transportation officials say an international bridge between Lubec and Campobello Island, New Brunswick is moving.

Officials say there is no cause for concern, but the 879-foot Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial Bridge, which opened in 1962, is going to need extensive rehabilitation or replacement in the coming years.

Maine Department of Transportation bridge engineer John Buxton said he will work closely with his Canadian counterparts over the next year to determine the scope of repairs or replacement.

Buxton’s New Brunswick counterpart Glenn MacDonald, said inclinometers were placed on concrete bridge piers nearest the Canadian island in December 2009 to detect movement. He says movement has been detected, but he didn’t say how much.

The Bangor Daily News says the bridge is owned and maintained by Maine and Canada.
