BANGOR — A Newport man is going to prison for eight years for fatally shooting his 76-year-old father.
Perley Goodrich Jr. was sentenced today in Penobscot County Superior Court.
A jury last month found the 46-year-old Goodrich guilty of manslaughter in the Oct. 26, 2009, death of his father, Perley Goodrich Sr. He was also guilty of aggravated assault for pistol-whipping his mother before shooting his father.
Goodrich’s attorney had told jurors that Goodrich’s actions were the result of a severe mental defect. But jurors ruled he was criminally responsible for the crimes.
