AUGUSTA — Maine’s community colleges will award a record number of degrees this month as graduation ceremonies get under way at the seven community college campuses around the state.

Central Maine Community College in Auburn will give out 570 diplomas at its commencement today. Graduation ceremonies are scheduled at other community colleges on Friday, Saturday and the following weekend.

In all, the community college system says 2,944 people will graduate from the schools this month, a 21 percent increase over last year.

Maine Community College System President John Fitzsimmons says community college enrollment has spiked 76 percent in the past eight years.
