PORTLAND — Three finalists have been selected for the position of city manager, to replace Joseph E. Gray, who retired earlier this year.

The finalists are acting city manager Patricia Finnigan; Julian Suso, the town manager of Framingham, Mass.; and Mark Rees, town manager of North Andover, Mass. They were picked from a field of 65 applicants. The search committee is comprised of city councilors Cheryl Leeman, John Anton and Jill Duson.

The public will have a chance to meet the finalists during a reception at City Hall from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday. According to a media release, the City Council will begin interviews this weekend and expect to make a recommendation next month.

Finnigan came to Portland in 2007 as assistant city manager, after working for the city of Auburn for 16 years, including 13 as city manager. Suso has more than 20 years of experience as a city and town manager in Massachusetts and Ohio. Rees, a former chief financial officer for Framingham, Mass., has worked in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, and has 20 years of experience as a town manager in Massachusetts.
