PORTLAND — Waynflete School has received a $2 million grant from The Malone Family Foundation to fund scholarships for gifted middle- and high-school students, the private school announced recently.

The foundation was established in 1997 by Dr. John C. Malone and his family to improve access to quality education, particularly at the secondary-school level, for outstanding students who lack financial resources.

Schools may not apply for grants. The foundation selects schools for sponsorship based on an assessment of academic caliber, staff quality, attention to individual student needs, commitment to financial aid and diversity of student body.

Waynflete also recently received a $5,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation to support the school’s mentoring program and an $8,000 grant from Bristol Seafood to support its summer ocean studies program.
