BANGOR — The University of Maine System chancellor will be stepping down next year.

Richard Pattenaude said today he will bow out when his contract expires in June 2012. The 65-year-old Pattenaude says it’ll be time to step aside after five years on the job and 16 years as University of Southern Maine president before that.

Pattenaude plans to officially notify University of Maine System trustees on Sunday that he won’t be seeking an extension on his current contract.

As chancellor, Pattenaude oversees the state’s seven universities, which have a combined enrollment of 42,000.
