Charlie Furbush, of South Portland, was called up to the Detroit Tigers today and could be making his major league debut soon.

The Tigers placed Brad Thomas on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation. Furbush, a starter for Triple-A Toldeo this season, is expected to pitch in long relief for Detroit. Furbush’s last start was Tuesday.

The Tigers play the Pirates in Pittsburgh at 7:05 tonight.

Furbush, a lefty who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2007 draft, is 4-3 with a 2.91 ERA this season, with 55 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings in eight starts. Opponents are hitting .176 against him.

Last season, Furbush played for three minor league teams in Detroit’s system – Class-A Lakeland, Double-A Erie and Toledo.
