BANGOR  — Prosecutors have rested their case in the double murder trial of a 32-year-old northern Maine man charged with fatally shooting a husband and wife in their home.

Nathaneal Nightingale of Burlington is charged with murder in the Nov. 28, 2009, deaths of Michael Miller Sr. and Valerie Miller in Webster Plantation. Both victims were 47.

Jurors on Thursday heard a recording of Nightingale telling a detective he took a .22-caliber revolver to the Millers’ home to pawn it for money to buy illegal painkillers. He said the gun went off accidentally as he was showing it to Michael Miller, and that he then shot Valerie Miller before making off with Michael Miller’s wallet and a safe.

The Bangor Daily News says Nightingale’s attorney is expected to conclude his case Friday.
