BRUNSWICK — The Navy is preparing to formally close Brunswick Naval Air Station.

The closing ceremony scheduled for Tuesday afternoon features the base commander, Capt. William Fitzgerald, and Rear Adm. Mark Boensel, commander of the Navy’s Mid-Atlantic region, along with other Navy officials and Gov. Paul LePage and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree.

There are fewer than a dozen Navy personnel remaining at the base, and the Navy is handing off to the Mid-Coast Regional Redevelopment Authority.

Fitzgerald says 30 percent of the base already has either been transferred or is under a lease license. The remainder will be transferred to civilian authorities through the fall. The Base Closure and Realignment Commission voted to close the base in 2005.
