Has the mystery of the missing “Open for Business” sign been solved?

Probably not. But an ad for a “Lightly used political sign” appeared on Craigslist on Wednesday evening.

For $1,000, the Kittery-based seller is offering the “right-wing political sign for sale, recently acquired, in excellent condition.” The pitch suggests it would look great “on the side of a barn, a Republican Party headquarters, or on the side of a row of portable toilets.”

The seller is willing to entertain trades for a multi-panel mural of the labor movement.

Someone informed the Maine Department of Transportation on Wednesday morning that the sign was missing from its spot along Interstate 95 in Kittery. The Transportation Department reported the sign stolen to Maine State Police.

The 4 foot by 8 foot sign – a gift to Gov. Paul LePage from supporters – was installed below a welcome sign that declares that Maine is “The Way Life Should Be.”

State police have gotten a few calls from the public and are following up on leads, said Stephen McCausland, a Department of Public Safety spokesman.

“No matter what time of day the theft occurred, even in the dead of night, there would have been dozens of cars that would have passed by that site,” he said.
