WARREN — Maine State Police are investigating the severe beating of an inmate at the state prison who is serving a life sentence for killing two women in 1995.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland says a team of detectives has been working the case since the May 24 assault on Lloyd Franklin Millett, but have not charged anyone yet.

The Bangor Daily News reports Millett is in critical condition at the Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Millett was convicted of killing the women over the course of a weekend in November 1995 while he was a farmhand in Turner. The victims were 39-year-old Terrie Lizotte of Canton and 33-year-old Rachelle Anne Williams of Gorham, N.H.
