BATH — Bath Iron Works plans to lay off up to 250 marine designers effective June 24.

Spokesman Jim DeMartini said the company notified leadership of the Bath Marine Draftsmen’s Association, or United Auto Workers Local 3999, last Friday.

Workers to be laid off will be notified Friday, June 10, he said.

“The reason for these layoffs is that our overall technical work load continues to decline, in part because we’re still ramping down from the peak of DDG 1000 lead ship design efforts,” DeMartini said in an e-mail. “Our Navy customer is buying fewer ships and is facing extreme budget pressures.”
