BRUNSWICK — Voters adopted next year’s $33.3 million school budget in a referendum on Tuesday.
The vote was 728-231. According to the town clerk’s office, only 6 percent of the town’s more than 15,800 registered voters went to the polls.
The fiscal 2012 budget temporarily closes Jordan Acres Elementary School and eliminates nearly 40 jobs, including 15 teachers.
The cuts are blamed on a decline in tuition from Durham students, and reduced federal and state aid, mostly due to the departure of U.S. Navy families and the resulting decline in enrollment.
In addition, the town had to shoulder about $3 million in debt service for the high school and Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School, $1.3 million more than last year.
Taxes will increase 3.5 percent as a result of the budget, and the tax rate will rise to $23.66 per $1,000 of valuation, an increase of 81 cents.
