Line workers have restored power to about 95 percent of the 26,500 customers who lost electricity in Thursday’s thunderstorms.

Central maine Power Co. said it expects to have electricity restored to all its customers by this afternoon.

Several severe thunderstorms came through the state early Thursday with high winds, heavy rain, hail and lightening. The heaviest damage was in Kennebec County, the utility said.

“We made tremendous progress overnight, and the plan is to continue working safely and restoring service throughout the day to customers affected by last night’s storms,” says Tom DePeter, director of Distribution for CMP.

At 11 a.m., an estimated 1,500 customers were without service, CMP said, most in Kennebec and York counties.
