YARMOUTH – Kelsey Bragdon pitched a seven-hitter as seventh-seeded Wells upset second-ranked Yarmouth 3-1 in nine innings Thursday in a Western Maine Class B softball quarterfinal.

The game was delayed 90 minutes because of thunder and a passing shower.

“(Bragdon) was outstanding. She kept them off balance and the defense made the outs behind her,” said Wells Coach Kevin Fox.

Bragdon, who struck out four and walked one, got defensive help in the fifth inning from right fielder Abby Moody, who threw out pinch-runner Lydia Ruetty trying to score from second on an overthrow after a dropped third strike.

Wells (12-5) had just two hits but made no errors.

“If our big bats aren’t producing, we know we have a solid defense that can win games,” said Fox.

Meaghan Lewia led off the Wells’ ninth with a single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice.

After Yarmouth issued intentional walks to the next two batters to load the bases, a groundout chased home the runners from third and second.

Bragdon got three ground-ball outs in the ninth to seal the win.

The Warriors scored a run in the third when Sophie Lamb walked, stole second and scored on a passed ball.

Yarmouth tied it in its half of the inning when Laura Klepinger singled, stole second and scored on a single by Alexa Sullivan.

Yarmouth’s Melissa Levinson was the only repeat hitter with two singles. McKenzie Gray struck out seven.

“We’re on a roll,” said Fox, whose team has won six straight, including its last five regular-season games.

RED STORM 9, NOBLE 0: Mo Hannan held the Knights (10-7) without a hit, striking out 13 of the 16 batters she faced, to lead the Red Storm (16-1) to a rain-shortened, five-inning win in a Western Class A quarterfinal at Scarborough.

Hannan induced two groundouts and one batter reached on an error. She also was 4 for 4 with a triple and an RBI. Abby Rutt went 3 for 3 with a two-run homer.

TELSTAR 12, MT. ABRAM 0: Kayla Merrill threw five perfect innings for her fourth no-hitter and 11th shutout this season as top-seeded Telstar (16-1) advanced by beating ninth-seeded Mt. Abram (7-9) at Bethel.

Telstar had 15 hits, including four doubles. Hannah Morin had a double, two singles and three RBI. Nicena Walker added two singles and four RBI, Katie Sumner had four hits and Kayla Merrill and Lyndsay Merrill each singled twice.

GEORGES VALLEY 12, ST. DOMINIC 1: Rachel Frye held the Saints (9-7) to an unearned run on one hit in six innings, and added three hits and three RBI to lead the Buccaneers (15-0) to a victory in the Western Class C quarterfinals at Thomaston.

Jill Bradbury completed the one-hitter, and Kennadi Grover added four hits with a home run. Natalie Russell had two hits and three RBI, and Kelsie Thompson had two hits and two RBI.

Mary Caron had St. Dominic’s hit.

WINSLOW 5, HERMON 3: Seventh-seeded Winslow (14-4) scored three runs in the third inning and defeated No. 2 Hermon in an Eastern Class B quarterfinal at Hermon.

Lynsey Vigue led off the third with a double and scored on a single by Kaite Bernard. Allison Leclair tripled to score Bernard, and Jen Poulin singled to drive in Leclair.

Leclair finished 3 for 4 with two RBI.

Autumn Poulin and Vigue each had a single and a double, and Bernard had two singles and an RBI.

Julie Riordan pitched a six-hitter for the win, striking out seven and walking one.

Katie Reynosa had two singles for Hermon.
