PORTLAND — The Scarborough girls’ lacrosse team defended its state title today with a 13-11 win against Brunswick in the Class A championship.

The Red Storm had balanced scoring, strong defense and an overall possession game that held off the Dragons at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Brunswick’s Dakota Foster scored three straight to make it a one-goal game with 24.7 seconds left, but the Red Storm gained possession, held on to score an empty netter with two seconds to play.

Maggie Smith and Laura Przybylowicz scored three each for Scarborough.

The team also got two goals from Kelsey Howard, Meghan Quirk, Mary Scott and the late empty netter from Dani Foster to seal it.

“I’m glad we came out on top,” said Howard. “Those last minutes were pretty nerve-racking, but it was nice to be challenged and still find a way to win.”
