The Maine Red Claws recently received five NBA Development League business awards for the 2010-11 season. The Red Claws earned honors in all five categories in which they were eligible: 1000+ full season tickets, $500,000+ in sponsorship revenue, 50+ sponsorship accounts, 75 percent+ season ticket renewal rate, and 75+ community appearances.

Members of Sweetser’s Brunswick Mobile Crisis Team were recently presented with an award from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department acknowledging their exceptional service to Lincoln County. The team, comprised of Dana Bontatibus, Mary Hanley, Laurel Bailey and Elizabeth Hansberger, was recognized for providing assessments to the Sheriff’s Department during crisis situations, and Crisis Intervention Training to members of the department.

PORTopera Artistic Director Dona D. Vaughn received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Southern Maine at its 131st commencement ceremony. Vaughn was recognized for her contributions to the cultural vitality of the region and her remarkable career in performance, directing, teaching, and encouraging new talent over the 17-year history of PORTopera. USM also presented three Distinguished Achievement awards to three Maine residents, Robert S. Blackwood Jr., of South Portland, Everett “Brownie” Carson of Brunswick, and Nathan M. Nickerson of Portland.

The Maine Civil Liberties Union Foundation presented the 2011 Justice Louis Scolnik Award to Cushman Anthony of North Yarmouth at a recent reception. The Scolnik Award honors members of Maine’s legal community who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the protection of civil liberties. An accomplished attorney and mediator, Anthony specialized in family law throughout most of his career, working at the law firms of Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson; Anthony, Howison, & Hayden; Anthony, Howison, Landis & Arn, and also as a solo practitioner. Highlights of his accomplishments over the years include founding the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic; serving as the third president of the MCLU; serving as director of advocacy at Portland’s Community Counseling Center. Additionally, from 1986 to 1992 he served in the Maine House of Representatives and on the Judiciary and Corrections Committees.

Avesta Housing’s Florence House received an Honorable Mention award in the special needs housing category of the 17th Annual Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Awards. The awards are presented to the most outstanding low income housing tax credit properties. The national awards program recognizes the best in affordable rental housing development. Florence House, a partnership between Avesta Housing and Preble Street, provides supportive housing without barriers to chronically homeless individuals in Portland.

Bowdoin College
recently won the The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partner Award in recognition for being the top purchaser of renewable energy among schools in the New England Small College Athletic Conference to voluntarily offset all of its Scope 2 emissions.

Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino, 41, of Falmouth, was recently crowned Mrs. Maine International and will go on to compete for the title of Mrs. International 2011 during the final competition to be held in Chicago in July.

Cumberland County Government
recently held its annual recognition luncheon for employees. The Employee of the Year Award was presented to the producer of the Cumberland County Chronicle, web designer and digital media specialist Angela Berube-Gray, for her work with the Sheriff’s Office on its annual report and other projects throughout the year. ACE Awards were presented to Angela Berube-Gray, Michael Beveridge, Richard Bradway, Gerard Brady, Scott Jordan. Retirees honored include Kathleen Calvo, Charles Elliott, William Hebert. Downeast Energy’s Brunswick, Bath and Lisbon Falls offices recently donated more than 70 teddy bears to the Mid Coast Hospital as part of its teddy bear campaign. Members of the Downeast Energy’s Mid Coast Hospital Teddy Bear Club collected stuffed animals from employees and customers for young patients undergoing medical treatment.
