CAPE ELIZABETH — Northern New England’s Coast Guard sector has a new commander.

Capt. Jim McPherson is being transferred to the First Coast Guard District in Boston, where he has been named chief of staff. He was replaced in a change-of-command ceremony today by Capt. Christopher Roberge, who previously served in Portsmouth, Va.

McPherson served out of the sector’s headquarters in South Portland for three years.

The guard’s northern New England sector is the regional operational command overseeing Coast Guard activities across Maine, New Hampshire and all of Lake Champlain, which borders Vermont, New York and Quebec.

Today’s ceremony was originally going to be held at Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, but was moved indoors to Cape Elizabeth Middle School because of the bad weather.
