Recently graduated Deering baseball standout Sam Balzano was given the annual Dr. John W. Winkin Award, symbolic of the state’s Mr. Baseball. Balzano hit .531 this season and scored 23 runs. He was also 5-0 on the mound in the regular season. Balzano, who will play at the University of Maine in Orono next year, joined Nick Caiazzo (1993), Stu Tisdale (1999) and Ryan Flaherty (2005) as Deering winners of the award, now in its 20th year.
