BANGOR — The trial of a man charged in the hit-and-run death of a University of Maine student last year is under way.
Twenty-three-year-old Garrett Cheney is charged with manslaughter, aggravated criminal operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident in the Jan. 30, 2010 death of Jordyn Bakley.
Her body was found by an Orono roadside.
On Tuesday, Penobscot County District Attorney Chris Almy told jurors in opening statements that Cheney’s vehicle hit Bakley as she was walking in the opposite direction and that he fled, crashing later on an interstate in Etna.
Cheney’s attorney says Cheney may have crashed into a snow bank but that he didn’t hit Bakley.
WCSH-TV says the trial is expected to last all week.
