FALMOUTH — Firefighters from three communities responded Sunday morning to a call from a man driving on Pleasant Hill Road who saw smoke coming from the roof of a house.

In the five minutes between the 10:23 a.m. call and when the Portland truck arrived, the caller and a neighbor were able to enter the home, wake two adults and a teenager who were asleep inside, and safely help them out of the house.

“It was a really great job by the passerby and the neighbor,” Falmouth Fire Chief Howard Rice said.

The Falmouth, Cumberland and Portland fire departments were able to contain the fire to the attic and roof. But the rest of the house at 56 Pleasant Hill Road was badly damaged by smoke and water, Rice said.

“(Firefighters) did a really good job containing the fire to the attic area,” Rice said.

While the official cause of the fire has not been determined by Monday, Rice said the flames appear to have originated in the attic and were likely the result of an electrical problem.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for observation. No one else was injured in the fire, although a cat remained missing.
